It has been proven that bad animal husbandry is THE biggest cause of bovine TB and that badgers were adopted as scapegoats in the 1970s and have been slaughtered ever since. Remember that the badger has supposedly been a protected species in the UK since the 1970s.
Shooters make a lot of money killing badgers. Conservatives by their very nature and links to the hunting and shooting set as well as wealthy farmers have always been in the pocket of these people. The National Farmers Union itself should hang its head in utter shame that it insists badger killing continues and no doubt once badgers are wiped out and become extinct (in say 20 years or so) they will look around for another animal to blame.
The killing has taken over half the UK badger population and the roads and cars kill upwards of 60,000 badgers per year on top. That is unsustainable for any species. We have seen the fox population drop and we have now seen what can only be described as a catastrophic drop in the badger population.
"We will cull for as long as we need to in order to make sure we become bovine TB-free" said Coffey (not the most reputable person and certainly not an expert in farming or bovine TB.What she is stating is that clearly every badger in the UK must be killed. And if Bovine TB continues after that...foxes? Then, what, field mice?
Only a change of government to one that bases its policies on protecting the natural environment and wildlife will stop badger and fox extinction. But will the lazy voters of the UK (who sat back and allowed Brexit because "Other people will vote to keep us in") vote for a change or will guzzling down beer and pizza while watching the latest "Love Island" series 'prevent' their being able to vote?
By 2040 I doubt we'll have any wild badgers and Red Listing them will make no difference since legal protection at the moment allows more to be killed than before legislation was brought in.
A "Nation of animal lovers" is a lie.
