The Killing Starts: Wittenberg District: Fight against Raccoons

Sadly, Germany appears to be getting more trap amd kill for species they do not like (well a small number of people do not like). So the demonising has begun -raccoons carry "dangerous round worms" -as do other animals including pet cats and dogs not wormed regularly -will they be trapped and shot by another "great hunter"?

The Wittenberg district is declaring war on raccoons. It has supported the district hunting association in purchasing a live trap and covered half of the cost of 450 euros. The trap will initially be used in the Gräfenhainichen area when the predator cannot be driven away, particularly in residential areas. The district is also waiving the fees for setting up the trap, District Administrator Christian Tylsch told us. After all, it is about human health.

Dangerous raccoon roundworm

The raccoon not only causes great damage to gardens and houses. It is also dangerous for humans because it can transmit roundworms through its excrement. Its larvae can cause serious damage to organs. For example, children playing in gardens or sandpits are at risk if they come into contact with the excrement. Salmonella, distemper and other diseases can also be transmitted by raccoons.

The district is therefore considering expanding the pilot project

Once all costs have been examined and many municipalities and hunters join in, more traps could follow. They are built in such a way that cats and other animals are not caught in them. They only go off when the curious raccoon reaches into a hole. The law stipulates that the caught raccoon must be killed by the hunter. It may not be released.
