Posted this to fox groups this morning. Someone posted that they used to see a fox pass by then it stopped. Immediately: "Put out food to encourage it into the garden" from members.
I need to state this because I know I sound like a scratched record and there are people who hate this but....
If a fox comes into a garden and you can see it that is nice. Howver, if you start putting food out to attract it then you are accepting a great deal of responsibility -if it is hunting it does not need extra food and there is the proven risk of habituating wild animals to humans which makes them easier to trap, snare or kill by the anti fox people.
DO NOT encourage foxes near to your doors or patios -pest controllers love that because if someone calls them in they can "sit and pop them off at our leisure" (easy money for them). Others find iteasier to get human habituated foxes to take poisoned bait.
Not everyone is a fox lover and if you encourage foxes into your home then, basically, you are responsible if that fox is killed because it entered another persons house -a house where it thought it could get food;. I am sick of hearing about foxes being poisoned and killed because they were habituated by humans.
A fox suffering mange or with an injury then yes -put mange treatment in food. But then leave them to be wild. You want a pet canid get a dog as then you can have a pet and wild canids -foxes- are NOT pets.
