It is currently the biggest internet story -but only because the Game of Thrones TV series is pulled in (never seen it).
Romulus and Remus are genetically modified grey wolves
Colossal Biosciences
My opinion after decades is that if humans have killed off species then those species are gone.
Wolves introduced to parts of the United States and given protection but psychopaths still go out and kill them for fun and those caught claim "I dun thought it wuz a coyote!". More wolves are introduced and when they reach a certain number -"Hey, guys and gals come and buy your licences -there';s wolves to kill!"
Europe protected the wolves and the populations build up and one or two isolated live stock kills (there is compensation) and politicians appreciated that brown envelope with a lot of Euros in from farmers and hunters groups start to yell that "We need to start culling -too many!"
Wolves, like lynx, will never be introduced to the UK because there are 'hunters' out there just waiting for the first introductions and.... guess the rest.
So what will happen to these newly created Dire wolves? A life of captivity somewhere so people can make money and continue extracting what they need. How long do you think it would be before some moron wanting a trophy of the "rarest wolf" in existence shoots one?
Also, what all the internet sites and bloggers are not telling anyone is that these are not Dire wolves. What Colossal Biosciences claims is that three pups born recently are dire wolves, whereas they are, in fact actually grey wolves with genetic edits intended to make them resemble the lost species.
New Scientist has reported on this but no one is interested in that. Fact do so get in the way of an entertaining story. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2475407-no-the-dire-wolf-has-not-been-brought-back-from-extinction/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJiFFJleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHk_fBL3kJIcCRS9IO8qrgF3JvGpIcDv1qJXlCs3RuTwpvdFPVSs7P0jNXZU1_aem_hZIVXd_MC0vY14SKYEE4IQ
There are some very -very- large wolves already out there in North America and they are under constant threat from morons with guns who might not be able to tell the world they shot a protected species but you can be damn sure they will have all the posing photos so they can brag to their equally dim pals.
The Dire Wolf has not returned.
